Another LTS (Long-Term-Support) release from Umbraco – one of the greatest CMS platforms out there. Another round of questions from clients. Should we upgrade? Is it worth it? Will something break? Fair. But this time, the answer is a little simpler.
Umbraco 17 arrives with a modern foundation on .NET 10, a refreshed back office, and a few practical improvements that quietly make life easier for teams running content-heavy, fast-moving websites. No fireworks, no gimmicks—just updates that matter when you manage a site every day.
A cleaner, faster, more reliable platform
Because Umbraco 17 is an LTS release, it’s built for those who prefer stability over experiments. It ships with support stretching well into 2028, which gives teams a long runway for planning instead of rushing through upgrades.
Performance has also taken a noticeable step forward. The platform runs leaner, responds faster, and feels more predictable during peak times. If you have a site with regular editorial activity or publishing deadlines, the difference is tangible.
Load-balancing in the back office is now supported out of the box too. That’s one of those features that you may not think about until you need it—typically when your editors all log in on Monday morning at the same time.
A small detail that makes a big difference
Umbraco now stores system dates in UTC. It sounds tiny, but if you’ve ever had a scheduled post to publish an hour early because someone forgot about daylight savings, you’ll appreciate this more than you expect. Distributed teams will especially welcome the cleaner, more consistent handling of dates and times.
A good moment to take stock
For anyone on an older version—particularly those nearing end-of-life—Umbraco 17 is a sensible place to land. It gives you a stable base with a long support cycle and positions your site for future growth without forcing a complete rebuild.
If you’re already on Umbraco 13 or 16, the upgrade path has been designed to be more forgiving than in the CMS’s earlier days. It still requires planning, but the platform does a good job of moving your content and settings across cleanly.
Thinking about your next step?
Upgrading isn’t urgent for everyone, but it is worth considering—especially if you’re planning improvements to content workflows, performance, or integrations over the next year. Umbraco 17 provides a solid foundation for all of that.
